«The Libertines» оправдывает звание «самой значимой группы последних 50 лет» — аванс, который выдали команде еще по выходу дебютного «Up The Bracket».

По сравнению с материалом дебютника новые песни характеризуются большей музыкальностью и лиричностью — так могли бы звучать «Битлз», если бы творили под влиянием Sex Pistols. Творческий тандем Карла Барата и Пита Доэрти значительно вырос в композиторском плане. Большинство представленных на альбоме композиций - крепкие хиты, которыми не побрезговали бы и мейнстрим-радиостанции. По большому счету, здесь наберется всего несколько песен, отсутствие которых прошло бы незамеченным. И это тем более удивительно, если принять во внимание длительность записи (10 дней) и атмосферу, царящую в студии (присутствие телохранителей, призванных разнимать Карла и Пита, увлеченных выяснением отношений). Каким образом парням удалось-таки закончить запись — одному Богу ведомо. Исходя из этого, не стоит пенять музыкантам на сырость материала и недостаточную проработку песен. Мик Джонс — продюсер записи — выжал из них все, что мог.

«The Libertines» получился еще более личным, чем предыдущий. Его песни построены в форме диалога между Карлом Баратом и Питом Доэрти (оба считают себя вокалистами, поэтому вынуждены делить вокальные партии напополам). Слушатели, ознакомленные с состоянием дел в команде, чувствуют себя подглядывающими в замочную скважину двери, за которой ссорятся и мирятся два старых друга. «Can't Stand Me Now», «The Saga», «What Became Of The Likely Land» Карл и Пит посвятили друг другу в частности и делам в группе в целом. «Have we enough to keep it together? Or do we just keep on pretending (and hope our luck is never ending...)» — спрашивает Карл в «Can't Stand Me Now». «No, I ain't got a problem / It's you with the problem» — отвечает ему Пит уже из «The Saga». «Please don't get me wrong/ See I forgive you in a song», — переходит право голоса к Карлу в «What Became Of The Likely Lads». Заключенный в названии песни вопрос повисает в воздухе и становится риторическим.

Британский проект The Libertines органично влился в новую волну почитателей старой школы рок-н-ролла, на поверхности которой уже болтались Strokes, Hives, Vines, Doves и прочая мажорная молодежь, желающая выпендриться перед своими малообразованными подругами.
Практически в самом начале своей карьеры в 2002 году четверка болезненно выглядящих молодых лондонцев: Карл Барат (Carl Barat, гитара/вокал), Пит Доэрти (Pete Doherty, гитара/вокал), Джон Хассэлл (John Hassall, бас) и Гэри Пауэлл (Gary Powell, ударные), была названа стараниями NME лучшими "новичками" Британии за хит "What a Waster". Дебютный же альбом "Up The Bracket" тоже поимел в своем активе весьма лестную критику.
Возможно, группа довольно быстро бы потерялась среди подобных, косящих под старину, молодых выскочек, если б не скандальный ореол, преследующий ее с момента основания. Отличие Libertines от своих коллег по цеху стоит искать, наверное, в своеобразной искренности их творчества, где не до хороших манер, где наркотики и алкоголь воспринимаются как само собой разумеющееся, где каждый день проживается как последний.
Вина за подобное позиционирование лежит на одном единственном человеке - замечательном фронтмене коллектива Доэрти, который проникся жизнью звезды рок-н-ролла еще до того момента, как он ею по-настоящему стал. В лучших традициях романтиков отечественного кинематографа - "украл, выпил, в тюрьму" - Пит преспокойно пьет и дебоширит, не брезгует героином и кокаином, тянет, что плохо лежит, ходит с оружием, за что его, естественно, сажают в кутузку, а потом кладут в клинику подлечиться от наркозависимости. В результате у группы регулярно срываются гастроли, фестивали, записи, а субтильный Пит абсолютно не чувствует никакой вины за происходящее и еще умудряется успевать что-то делать для своего сайд-проекта Babyshambles. Это даже не похоже на картинную галлахеровскую работу на публику, когда при нехватке музыкальных идей в ход идут кулаки и сломанная мебель. В ситуации с милягой Питом все происходит очень гармонично и смахивает на патологию с манией саморазрушения, в лучших традициях Richey James из Manic Street Preachers.
В перерывах с отсидками и лечением Доэрти Libertines, которых тянул на себе Барат, все-таки сумели записать второй альбом "The Libertines", который вышел не намного хуже первого, скорее даже сильнее и напористей по части драйва. Без присущего молодым командам пафоса, популярно просто и доступно как Beatles, хулигански-разнузданно как Clash, страдальчески-замороченно как Cure Libertines сотворили неплохой ностальгический мини-шедевр.
Ломано-отточенные гитарные запилы парней из рабочих кварталов, спотыкающийся страдальческий вокал Doherty, в меру депрессивные тексты о поверхностной любви и противоречивых человеческих взаимоотношениях, вкупе с неподдельной нездоровой рок-н-ролльной атмосферой настораживают, но в то же время вселяют приятный трепет в поклонников живого, а не студийно-выхолощенного, искреннего звучания 70-х. На диске нет абсолютно ничего нового для меломанов со стажем, но все сыграно явно "от души".
Несмотря на экстремальные повседневные подвиги фронтмена, манера игры Libertines все же выглядит относительно спокойно, без каких-либо признаков истерии и впадения в крайности, хотя на бодрый трэш ("Arbeit Macht Frei") команду пробивает гораздо чаще, чем на меланхоличные "домашние" пьесы а ля "What Katie Did". Может быть, именно поэтому окончательное изгнание Доэрти из группы стало логичным итогом ситуации.
Удержится ли группа на плаву - станет понятно после выхода следующего альбома.
